We Used to Be Friends by Amy Spalding is a heart wrenching story about the worst breakup of them all, a childhood friendship. This story is told in a dual timeline fashion which makes the book exciting. The main characters, James (a girl) and Kat, are inseparable at the beginning of their senior year. But at the end of the year, they no longer speak. James prepares to go to college as she reflects on her relationship with Kat, and Kat looks back at it while she thinks about being newly in love with her first girlfriend. Kat and James both have moments in their life where they wish they could have their relationship back. Spalding does a wonderful job describing both Kat and James’ view on the complicated relationship.
