If you read and loved the “Divergent” series by Veronica Roth in your adolescence, you will love her most recent book, Chosen Ones. Falling under the Adult Read category, this novel follows five heroes into their adulthood, ten years after saving the world. The now twenty-something year-olds must face different demons as the clarity from the past fades and new issues arise.
Ten years ago these five teenagers – Sloane, Ines, Matt, Esther, and Albie, were recruited by a government agency because one of them was prophesied to be “the chosen one” who would save the world. At the time, a tyrant named the Dark One was terrorizing the planet and endangering people. After the five defeated the Dark one, the world returned to years of peace and celebrated their new heroic celebrities. Everyone seems to move on happily except for the protagonist Sloane. The trauma and endless stress from the reign of terror still haunts her dreams. Everyone seems to have moved on with their lives until one of the chosen suddenly passed away on the ten year anniversary of peace. While gathered for the funeral of their lost friend, they discover that the Dark One was never truly defeated.
This novel deals with complex themes of perception, prophecy, and unveils the real struggles of being the “chosen one”. With all the twists and turns you won’t be able to pull your head out of the world Roth has created.
