I thought What Lane? by Torrey Maldonado was an insightful and powerful novel that explores themes of identity, friendship, and the complexities of growing up. The story follows Stephen, a 12-year-old boy who navigates the challenges of being both Black and Latino in a neighborhood where these identities sometimes feel at odds with each other. As Stephen begins to understand more about who he is and how the world sees him, he finds himself grappling with tough decisions about how to handle his friendships, family, and the way others perceive him.
What I really loved about this book was how it gave an honest portrayal of the internal and external struggles Stephen faces. His journey of self-discovery, trying to figure out where he fits in and how to balance his different cultural backgrounds, felt incredibly real and relatable. The way Stephen dealt with issues like prejudice, expectations from his family, and the dynamics of friendship resonated with me and gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges young people face in finding their place in the world.
The relationships in the book, particularly between Stephen and his friends, were well-developed and added emotional depth to the story. The themes of loyalty, respect, and standing up for what’s right were explored in a way that felt empowering. Although the pacing was a bit slow at times, What Lane? was still a thought-provoking and impactful read that touched on important issues like race, identity, and the pressures of growing up. It’s a great reminder of the importance of being true to yourself and the complexities of navigating the world through multiple lenses.
