Tune It Out by Jamie Summer

I thought Tune It Out by Jamie Sumner was a heartfelt and relatable novel that explores the challenges of finding your voice while dealing with mental health, family dynamics, and the pressures of school. The story follows Lou, a young girl who has always had a difficult time fitting in due to her sensory processing disorder. When Lou moves to a new town, she hopes for a fresh start, but she quickly realizes that it’s not just her condition that makes life hard—her family’s struggles with keeping it all together add extra layers of stress.

What I really loved about this book was how it sensitively portrayed Lou’s experience with sensory processing disorder, making her struggle feel both unique and universal. The way she learns to navigate her world, with the help of her new friends and her supportive teacher, was both inspiring and moving. The friendships Lou forms, especially with her classmate, are heartwarming and really added to the depth of the story.

The emotional depth and Lou’s growth throughout the book were beautifully done, but I did wish for a bit more development of some of the secondary characters, particularly Lou’s family members, as their storylines felt less explored. Still, Tune It Out was a touching and important read, offering valuable insights into what it’s like to live with a sensory processing disorder and the importance of finding acceptance and support. It’s a great reminder of how we all have unique challenges to overcome and the power of self-acceptance.
