Out of every book in the entire well known and recognized hunger games series I by far enjoyed reading Sunrise on the Reaping the most. This book took me on a roller coaster of emotions like no other book in this series has before. It also included many Easter eggs and references to the earlier books in the series. This book is set 24 years before the first novel, taking place on the quarter Quell/fiftieth hunger games. This story follows the journey of a clever and loving sixteen year old boy named Haymitch Abernathy from district 12 who wants nothing more than to spend the rest of his days with his girlfriend Lenore Dove and his family. Haymitch’s birthday falls on the fourth of July which is also coincidentally the same day that the capitol randomly selects one girl and one boy from each district to fight to the death. Like every year Haymitch’s birthday falls on the day of the reaping (the day where tributes are chosen to participate in the hunger games.) This year, in order to honor the fiftieth anniversary of the capital’s reign over the districts, there will be four tributes chosen from each district instead of the typical two. On the day of the reaping everything goes smoothly as four names are called up as district twelves tributes. It seems like Haymitch and his girlfriend are in the clear until chaos erupts throughout the district. Overall, I think this book is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci fi and young adult novels. Additionally I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed the previous books in the hunger game series or plan to read the hunger games series soon.
