Growing up without both parents is definitely one of the hardest things for any child to go through. Bel Price is one of the many unlucky children who face this reality. Bel’s mother disappeared when she was young, and she was the only witness, but she has no recollection of it. Bel wishes everyone would forget about her mother’s disappearance. In a life where she is already at a disadvantage not having both parents, she wants to be able to live without worrying about where her mother went. Just when things feel they are going back to normal, a documentary is made about Bel’s mother. Bel longs for the day the documentary will be finished, and hopefully, her life can return to normality. But Bel never gets what she wishes for. Bel’s mother, Rachel, reappears during the filming of the documentary. Bel thinks the timing is quite convenient, and doesn’t believe anything her mother says. Her mother recalls a crazy story about her disappearance and reveals some harsh truths about Bel’s family. This novel brings readers through the twists and turns of unstable family life. It touches on the fact that we don’t always know the truth about those closest to us, and that the truth is more painful than the lie.
