FAQ:

  • What is Curbside Pickup?

Curbside pickup allows Fairfield Public Library cardholders to borrow and pickup physical library materials that they have placed on hold from the Main or Woods library by scheduled appointment.  If you are a Fairfield resident that needs a library card please click here.  You can check the status of your existing library account through the My Account link.  Please review your account information to make sure your telephone number and email are correct.

  • Why Curbside Pickup?

Resuming library services will be a gradual process.  The safety of our staff and patrons is our highest priority.  We are pleased to be able to get books back in the hands of our library cardholders, utilizing this contact-free service.  Library staff have been trained in the safe handling of materials.  Our procedures are based upon guidelines provided by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) on the safe handling of library materials.  Findings of the REALM Project will also inform future industry standards regarding library materials handling.

  • How do I request an item to borrow?

Reserve the items you wish to borrow by placing a hold on the item through the library catalog. The catalog can be accessed from our website  on the top right of our homepage or through the FPLCT To Go mobile app.  Simply search for the item in our catalog by entering a keyword, author, title or subject.  When you see the item you wish to borrow click on the purple “Place Hold” button to the right.  You will be prompted to enter your library card barcode number (no spaces) and PIN (your PIN is PATRON if you have not changed it).  Please note that you can choose to pick up materials at the Main Library or Woods Branch.   • What can be borrowed?

All items can be borrowed with the exception of:  Museum passes, STEAM Kits and Little Learner Circle Kits.  Although you cannot place holds on backpacks from the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten collection directly, you can request to borrow a backpack by emailing:  Childrens-Library@fplct.org.  1000 Books Before Kindergarten backpacks can only be picked up and returned at the Main Library.  There is a limit of 2 backpacks per Fairfield Public Library card.

  • How many items can I check out?

The current limit is 10 items per card.  EXPRESS DVD Limit is 2 per library card. You can pick up available hold items for all members of your household at one time.  Please let staff know at time of scheduling if you will be picking up for family members as well.  Items will be checked out to your card (and each family member’s card) just prior to your scheduled curbside pickup appointment.

  • How long can items be borrowed for?

Due dates will be clearly noted on the receipt included with your borrowed items.  Please visit our Loan Periods page for specifics.  You can also check due dates by accessing the My Account quick link located on the upper right of our homepage.

  • How long does the Curbside Pickup process take?

Every effort will be made to get materials to you as soon as possible.  Safety protocols and patron demand will drive wait times for materials.  We appreciate your patience with this new service model.

  • How will I know my holds are ready to be picked up?

When your holds are available, you will receive an email or a text message with a link to schedule an appointment for pickup. Click the link, then choose a date and a time slot. Click continue, then fill out the form with your information. Your time slot will be tentatively reserved. You will receive an email after you book your appointment, and a second email when your appointment is confirmed. If you already have an upcoming appointment scheduled, you don’t need to book another one. We’ll bundle all your available holds together when you pick up.

If you have any mobility issues or need assistance during pickup, please leave a note in the “car” field. If you are not registered for email or text message notifications, you will receive a phone call to schedule your pickup. In the interest of time and safety, your checked out items will only be available for pickup at the time of your scheduled appointment.

  • Where do I pick up my items?

Main:  The main entrance on the parking lot side.  At your scheduled pick up time, enter the driveway, drive around the full circle of the lot, and pull into the parking space in front of your designated cart.

Woods:  The main entrance of the building.  At your scheduled pick up time pull up in front of your designated cart.

By Car:  At your scheduled appointment time, pull up to your designated cart and remain in your car. A library staff member will bring out your holds in a bag and leave it on the cart. Once staff returns to the building, you may exit your vehicle and retrieve the bag. Please utilize a face covering when leaving your car to retrieve your bag from the cart.  Please maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and others. Please do not linger, as other patrons will be scheduled to pick up their items as well.

On Foot: At your scheduled appointment time, walk up to your designated cart and verify your last name with a library staff member. The library staff member will then place your materials on the cart.  Once staff returns to the building, you may retrieve hold bag. Please utilize a face covering, and maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and others.  Please do not linger as other patrons will be scheduled to pick up their items as well.

  • What hours is Curbside Pickup available?

When your holds are available, you will receive an email or a text message with a link to schedule an appointment for pickup. You can choose the date and time for your pickup from the choices available. If you already have an upcoming appointment scheduled, you don’t need to book another one. We’ll bundle all your available holds together when you pick up.

If you are not registered for email or text message notifications, you will receive a phone call to schedule your pickup and a staff member will advise you of available Curbside Pickup appointment times.

  • Should I clean or disinfect library books?

No.  This action may damage the book.  All library books are quarantined for a minimum of 96 hours before being placed into circulation as recommended by the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) on the safe handling of library materials.

  • Can I still get staff reading recommendations?

YES!  Visit our Find a Good Book page for your next great read.  Library staff is also available by using the “Ask a Question” tab on the far upper right of our homepage or by emailing eref@fplct.org.  Children’s book recommendations can be found here or by emailing Childrens-Library@fplct.org.  A listing of great Teen reads can be found here.

  • How do I return materials?

Items must be returned in the drops on the side of the building. DO NOT PLACE RETURNS ON THE PICKUP CARTS. Items will stay on your card for at least 4 days after you have returned them, due to our materials quarantining procedure, in accordance with guidelines provided by the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) on the safe handling of library materials.  Please NO book donations of any kind during this time.

  • Are digital materials still available?

Yes.  You can continue to enjoy FPL’s digital offerings 24/7.  For those of you that are new to the digital platform or simply need a refresher course, FPL offers tutorials and programs to assist you in becoming a regular digital user.

  • When will all in-person library services and full public access to library facilities resume?

The Fairfield Public Main Library is open for quick browsing and checkout Monday through Saturday from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, and from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Woods Branch building will remain closed to the public during the elevator construction project currently taking place.  Library services and access will be restored in a coordinated and phased effort.   We will continue to follow public health guidelines for operations and keep the public updated as the situation evolves.

  • Is the library holding any programs?
