How Do I...

June 14 through August 10*

Find your inner detective this summer at the library! Last summer you cast your votes and our new library mascot is now the fox! This summer we will solve a few mysteries… what is our mascot’s name? What do they like to read? And of course – what will YOU read this summer?! What stories captivate you? Will you try something new? Solve the mysteries and explore all the genres storytelling has to offer this summer!

Read, write book reviews, attend events, and complete bonus activities to earn points and reach your goal this year! Browse the Badges area to find your point goals and extra activities to stay engaged this summer. All virtual badges unlock tickets for Grand Prizes. When you unlock a points badge, visit the library to post it on your open book tracker!

Prizes for point badges along the way include brag tags, a free book, a lawn sign, and for those reaching the bonus 1,500 points level – an FPL *fox* plushie!

Children’s Summer Challenge (entering grades K – 5)

Go to your Beanstack account to register online starting Monday, May 20, 2024. When you register as a family, you will have one username and password to log in for all readers. Don’t remember your login information? Recover your password through the login screen. Need help with Beanstack? Give us a call or send us an email and we will assist you.

You can read anything you like! Need inspiration? Ask a Librarian or find recommendations on one of our many reading lists separated by age, grade, and/or genre. Book lists can also be found in Beanstack.

**Remember, you can log reading minutes as a family, so caregivers can use these minutes toward the Adult Summer Challenge!**

Visit your Beanstack profile on the web or the mobile app to log the number of minutes you’ve read, beginning June 14th. Earn points by reading, writing book reviews, and completing bonus activities (see Activity Badges)! Learn how many points you earn for each activity by clicking on the item in Beanstack.

Virtual badges unlock tickets toward Grand Prizes. See the Ticket Drawings tab and spend your tickets on any prize that catches your eye. The first 800 readers to complete the challenge at 1,000 points will receive a Clever Reader lawn sign! The first 500 readers to reach 1,500 points will receive an FPL llama plush stuffed animal!

TIPS FOR MAKING SUMMER READING FUN!

Visit the Library: With weekly challenges, craft projects, and raffle drawings throughout the summer, the Library staff knows how to make reading F-U-N!
Be the Leader: Show your child that reading is an important part of your life by modeling reading as a fun activity that the entire family can enjoy. When you sign up as a reader yourself, you can play the challenge together!
Talk It Up: Good books deserve to be shared, so be sure to talk about what you’re reading and ask your child to share their book with you and their friends.

WHY IS SUMMER READING IMPORTANT?

A three-year study by Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Studies showed that students who take part in their local library’s summer reading program significantly improve their reading skills. Kids who participate in these programs are 52 Lexile points ahead of their peers who do not. Summer reading programs are also an antidote for learning loss (summer slide). So instead of losing knowledge and skills during the summer months, kids who attend reading programs show gains.
