When your child is born, they can get a library card! Come to the Children’s Library or the Circulation Desk to fill out a registration form. The parent or legal guardian must show proof of ID and Fairfield residency. The parent or legal guardian must sign the form to be the responsible party for all materials checked out on the child’s card. Please see the Get a Library Card page for more information.

The Children’s Room has programs for children ages 0-5th grade. Our robust early literacy class calendar offers over a dozen every week throughout the year for preschool children ages 0-5. Our school-age events and classes cover a variety of interests including science, literature, art, and cooking! Please see the Events Calendar for specific dates and times of upcoming programs.

Drop-in programs do not require advance registration. For early literacy classes, tickets are handed out to participants 30 minutes before the start of class. Space is limited.

Registration programs require advance registration online, in-person, or by telephone before the start of the program. Registration start dates for programs vary by age and program. Please call the Children’s Desk or visit the Events Calendar for more information.

The Children’s Room has been designed to foster imaginative and creative play. Our Children’s play spaces have puzzles, manipulatives, brick-building tables, dramatic play areas, and more. We also have AWE Early Literacy Digital Learning Stations available to build for joint media engagement skills for your family. The Children’s Room also has puzzles, board games, and card games available for older children and their caregivers to play inside the Library.

A children’s library card is needed to log on to the internet computers in the Children’s Room. If your child does not have a library card, please visit the Children’s Desk to obtain a guest pass for your child to log on to a computer. Children under the age of 12 have priority on all computers in the Children’s Room.

If all computers are full, please use the Reservation System to secure a computer for your child.

Yes, to ensure the safety of all who utilize the library, the Children’s Room follows the Library Code of Conduct. Please refer to Library Policies for more information.

Food and drink may be enjoyed outside or in the vestibule at the Main Library in the warmer months. In the winter we may open up an area indoors for the comfort of our patrons, please check in with a Children’s Services staff member.

Children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the Children’s Room without parent or caregiver supervision.

Adults who do not have a child with them are welcome to take material from the Children’s Library but are asked not to linger. Please refer to Library Policies for more information.
