Woodsie Band by Diane P

Pig Joins the Band

Story Time at Fairfield Woods ended on a “HIGH” note!  We conducted our “Woodsie Band” with bells, rhythm sticks, and a xylophone and performed our own version of the sound of music!  We read Little Pig Joins the Band and used the CD for added sound effects.  The Children’s SongBag by Paul DuBois Jacobs contains many simple compositions without sharps or flats, which can be banged out on the xylophone.  We made a cardboard guitar as a… Read More

May is “Get Caught Reading” month

what-are-you-reading

“Get Caught Reading” began in 1999 as a national campaign to promote the joys of recreational reading-reading for the fun of it- for readers of all ages. It is a way to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read for pleasure. The campaign is supported by the Association of American Publishers, the national trade association of the book publishing industry in the United States. The hope is to encourage people to… Read More

What’s In Your Child’s Lunchbox? by Ms. Joleen

lunchbox

First Lady Michelle Obama has been in the news lately for trying (much to my high-schooler’s chagrin!) to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches in her quest to reduce childhood obesity in the U.S.  That initiative, coupled with a recent report about the many health risks of sugar consumption, may have us parents rethinking what we feed our kids. FPL’S Children’s Collection can help you make some informed decisions with our many books on… Read More

Does a Zookeeper Sleep at Night? By Ms. Diane

GoodnightGorilla

Where do all the zoo animals sleep at night? The “Woodsies” know! During story time we danced like elephants, roared like tigers, stretched like giraffes, and read Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann. We also watched the Weston Woods DVD which accompanies the book. The children laughed at the mischievous gorilla and the animal antics. We did wonder if the Zookeeper had a good night’s sleep! Last week some of the Children’s Librarian’s attended CLA, Connecticut Library Association’s annual meeting. Groups of librarians from all over the state meet each year to talk about what’s new in the library world and “recharge our creativity.” We previewed some new Children’s books – everything from a new Sandra Boynton book about bunnies to a new series about a young Harry Houdini. The day included seminars about the Common Core State Standards for Connecticut, an… Read More

April Showers Bring May Flowers

Hurray for spring

“April Showers Bring May Flowers.” We have all heard this rhyme at some point, usually having been taught it at an early age by our parents or teachers. The saying may be traced back to the mid 1500’s as found as a short poem and earlier use may have existed. April is traditionally a very rainy month, but gives way to the month of May, when flowers bloom because of the water provided to them by… Read More

Halloween Houdini

Are you ever in the mood to just watch videos of adorable cats? We get that way too. But sometimes you really just need a good book about adorable cats. Here are some of my favorites. A fun, funny and… Read More

Throughout the workshop, we learned a little bit about the history of fashion, techniques to create a pattern for skirts, and how the world around us can inspire us to make amazing things!
