Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog resident of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania, emerges from his dwelling in Gobblersknob on February 2. Residents celebrate the beloved groundhog with a festive atmosphere of music and food. The folklore has been around since the 1800’s. If “Phil” sees no shadow, it means there will be an early Spring, but if he sees his shadow it means there will be six more weeks of Winter on the way. Brrr-let’s hope he sees his shadow!
Cindyb suggests this fun song for you to sing on Groundhog Day:
GROUNDHOG DAY ( to the tune: “Do Your Ears Hang Low?”)
Well, It’s Groundhog Day,
See him starting on his way.
See him look with fright, to the left and to the right.
If he doesn’t run away,
You’ll know Spring is on its way
Yes, it’s Groundhog Day!
